Architectural Signage in a School Setting – August 2011
New to our project portfolio in 2010/11 are schools. Here the challenge
has been to provide signage solutions that meet an acceptable standard
taking into consideration the budget constraints.
An excellent example is Phibblestown Schools Campus, working with PJ Hegarty
and Sons and Newenham Mulligan and Associates Architects this project comprised
Scoil Ghráinne, Coláiste Pobail Setanta and Phibblestown Community Centre.
MG Planx was the chosen system for the interior directory signage. In the Community
Centre consideration was given to accessibility for all, here Braille and tactile was included
in the manufacture. The door signs in each building were natural aluminium with dark grey
text which showed a clear contrast between panel colour and text colour and the use of
icons helped all user groups make intuitive choices, irrespective of age or first language.
To comply with current legislation signs were in Irish/English and in Irish only in the Gael Scoil.
External Building Identity signage was brushed stainless steel 316 grade lettering with digital
crest applied to face of logos. Aluminium External post panels provided directional signs around
