Architectural Signage in a Court Setting - February 2011
Working with The Courts Service and OPW Architects we have completed two New Courthouse Projects in Kilkenny and Monaghan.
Accessibility for all is critical in public sector buildings. When wayfinding both of these projects, after consultation with the architect and client, we proposed a sign solution based on the principle of providing only the exact information people need at key wayfinding points to facilitate ease of movement. This “less is more” approach reduces the number of signs to a minimum. In addition, to make the building as simple as possible to navigate Braille and tactile, clear contrast between panel colour and text colour and the extensive use of icons help all user groups make intuitive choices, irrespective of age, language or culture. In selecting a sign system, safety and durability are key in public environments, with hygiene and ease of maintenance essential.
